Science and technology have come to the forefront as Virginia has evolved from a predominantly agrarian society to an economy powered by a mix of farming, industry, and the activities of governmental agencies. From its early invention of the grain reaper, Virginia has now progressed to a leadership role in technology. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Langley Research Center, established in 1917 in Hampton as the Agency’s original field operation, is a research science, technology, and development center that provides innovation. The Center for Innovative Technology in northern Virginia, founded in 1985, grows and diversifies the state’s economy by investing in and accelerating innovation, commercialization, and entrepreneurship.
