Parking gates and entrance to the VMHC

Parking Information

Paid parking is available behind the VMHC, with entrances from Kensington Avenue and opposite the VMFA parking garage (from N Sheppard St. or Stuart Ave). The parking lot is open 24/7. Please note: parking is at own risk. Learn more about parking regulations.

Parking is always free for VMHC Members! Non-member parking fees are $5 for four hours and $1 every hour thereafter. (Not a member yet? Join today.)

  Member Parking Instructions:

•To enter the lot, please scan the barcode on your membership card. If you do not have your membership card, it has expired, or does not scan, take a ticket from the machine when you enter. A Guest Associate will be happy to validate your parking for the day and have a new card sent to you if necessary.

•To exit the lot, scan your membership card or validated ticket. If you have trouble exiting, press the “call” button and an associate will assist you remotely.

Museum Store & Museum Café

The Museum Store and Museum Café are open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm to provide guests with opportunities to refresh, relax, and explore products related to Virginia history and enhance their gallery experience. The Museum Store features books, gourmet goods, home decor, toys, art, apparel, accessories, and more. The Museum Café features coffee from Virginia-based vendors, tea, and espresso beverages; wraps, sandwiches, and salads; baked goods; and wine and Virginia beer that can be enjoyed in a cozy indoor atmosphere or al fresco on the patio.

Host a Meeting or Event at the Museum

The Virginia Museum of History & Culture, centrally located on N Arthur Ashe Boulevard, offers a variety of unique spaces for meetings, conferences, ceremonies, receptions, and other special events. Our events team will work with you to find the right combination of indoor or outdoor locations across the property to suit events of almost any size. Museum spaces can accommodate anywhere from 50 to 300 guests.

Virginia House

Interested in information about our historic property, Virginia House? While this romantic English Tudor manor house located in Richmond's Windsor Farms neighborhood is not open to the public, it is occasionally open for special VMHC-hosted events (check our events calendar for upcoming programs) and for private rentals (click the button below to make a reservation). The Museum is committed to accessibility and inclusive experiences for all our guests. 

  • Mobility: Our building is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. Wheelchairs and other manually operated mobility devices are available.
  • Museums for All: As a proud member of the Museums for All national initiative to make quality museum learning experiences available to everyone, the VMHC offers free admission for low-income families. Guests who present their SNAP or WIC Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) Card at the Guest Services will receive free admission.
  • Sensory Concerns: The Virginia Museum of History & Culture has partnered with the Autism Society of Central Virginia to provide staff with training. To help make the experience of exploring the VMHC accessible and enjoyable for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder or sensory concerns, guests can check out noise-canceling headphones and fidget toys to use during their visit. These items can be checked out for free from the Guest Services desk. Guests who would like to check out headphones or fidgets need to leave a form of ID, which will be returned once the item is returned to the Guest Services desk.

You can also explore the Current Exhibitions page to see specific details about each gallery and explore 360 views of the spaces. Return Visit Voucher: If you find the museum too overwhelming and need to leave within 30 minutes after entering the museum, please stop by the Guest Services desk to receive a voucher to try again on another day.
  • Website Accessibility: The VMHC is committed to maintaining and enhancing our website accessibility for as many users as possible, regardless of technology or ability. We are adhering to standards set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. Our website accessibility features include: 
    • Using alternative text for images and non-text elements
    • Cross-browser compatibility
    • Responsive design
    • Multi-language webpage translation via Google Translate
    • The use of headers to aid legibility
    • Having separate audio files for videos
    • Adding closed captioning on videos (in progress)
