PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 

VMHC is happy to offer professional development at no cost to SW VA Educators. Past workshops have taken us to Abington, the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, and the Montgomery Museum of Art & History in Christiansburg. If you would like to connect with us for a program, please feel free to get in touch! Upcoming Workshops include:

August 6th-7th, 2024 Professional Development Workshop at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture - Register Here

  • Participants in this workshop will receive an introduction to the Virginia Museum of History & Culture's resources! Experiences will include exhibition tours, behind-the-scenes access to collections, and guided primary source analysis selected to fit the grade levels and subjects taught by the attending educators. To make this trip to Richmond feasible for Southwest Virginia educators, we will be providing a $400.00 per person stipend to be applied towards travel costs and a hotel room, which will be paid out upon completion of the program. Please note: This workshop is limited to 20 educators. See below for the schedule:
    • August 6th: 11:30-12:30 Optional Lunch & Check-In, 12:30-5:00 Workshops dedicated to exhibition tours, student-led research projects, and primary source analysis
    • August 7th: 9:30-1:00 Workshops dedicated to new civics resources being prepared by the VMHC, behind-the-scenes exploration of our research library collections, and additional exhibition tours. Breakfast and snacks provided.

FREE HistoryConnects Programs

HistoryConnects distance learning programs are live, interactive videoconferences centered on in-depth investigations of primary sources from the VMHC’s vast collection. We offer a large catalog of programming (available here). 

Virginia History Day Support

The VMHC is the state affiliate of National History Day, a project-based learning program for students grades 4-12. This interdisciplinary research project helps students develop historical thinking and literacy skills while making the study of history engaging, relevant, and most of all, fun. To find out more about Virginia History Day and how we can support your classrooms, please contact Sam Florer (sflorer@VirginiaHistory.org).

  • Where: Birthplace of Country Music Museum, Bristol VA
  • What: Join educators from the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, Virginia Humanities, and Birthplace of Country Music Museum to engage with historical thinking skills through the project-based learning program Virginia History Day and the education resources of all three institutions. Participation in the workshop includes coffee and a light breakfast, $75.00 stipend, certificate of participation for CEU points
