401(k)
The VMHC offers a 401(k) that vests on the first day you start! There is also an above average match of indivudual contributions by the organization.
Insurance
The VMHC subsidizes medical, dental, vision, and long term disability plans and pays for life and short term disability insurance. There is also an option for employees on a medical plan to participate in an HSA or FSA.
VTO & PTO
The VMHC offers a generous amount of paid time off because we realize that everyone needs time away to rest and recharge. We also support charitable work at other organizations by providing paid time for volunteering in the community.
Continuing Education
The VMHC holds Diversity & Inclusion training for all staff annually. Staff also has access to various industry organizations of which the VMHC is a member including VAM and AASLH. And each department has a professional development budget to use at its discretion.
Wellness
We know that life has its ups and downs. The VMHC cares about employee wellness and offers an Employee Assistance Program to support their mental and emotional well-being. We also offer a Health Advocate program to help employees navigate the complexities of the healthcare system.

Interested in a museum internship?
Are you looking for an internship position? Whether you are interested in museum collections, public relations, or education, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture is a great place to learn about the different skills necessary to work in a museum. All interns must be at least eighteen years old. Internship applications require a cover letter and resume. In order to qualify for a PAID internship, you must be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate school.
Join the VMHC as a volunteer
Our volunteers have the opportunity to gain exposure in the workings of a museum and contribute valuable visitor services to our guests. Qualified volunteers should possess a flexible attitude for dealing effectively with the public, proficiency with computers, and an understanding that reliability is critical.
Volunteer positions are open to all individuals who meet the qualifications outlined above, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, or disability. The Virginia Museum of History & Culture does not accept court-mandated volunteers.
