Research Library

Our research library provides access to an unrivaled collection of primary and secondary sources, including books and journals, manuscripts, maps, broadsides, and sheet music related to the history and culture of Virginia.

New Library Reading Room

The VMHC is currently closed for construction. A limited number of museum galleries will reopen on July 1, and we are excited to begin offering in-person programming over the summer. We will continue to offer a robust variety of virtual events and digital programs as well. While we are closed, Library staff are happy to answer research questions and inquiries about photocopies of manuscript and print materials at 804.342.9677 or [email protected]. The Reading Room

The Reading Room is open to all, from the curious visitor to the professional researcher. Our library collection is non-circulating, and all library materials may only be examined in the Reading Room. Researchers who are unable to visit in person are able to request limited photocopies of portions of published works and manuscript collections for research purposes.

We hope that you will find what you are looking for within our online catalogs or among our Research Resources, but if you are in need of additional assistance, please contact our research team at 804.342.9677 or [email protected].
