Becoming Citizens Class

Becoming Citizens Class

DESCRIPTION

In this 7–session course, museum staff will prepare students to successfully complete the U.S. citizenship test. Like other citizenship courses, students will learn the civics and history lessons necessary to pass the citizenship examination.

Unlike other citizenship classes, this course, held at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, offers students opportunities to personally interact with original historical objects, maps, books, and documents and engage with experts in the history of this state and nation. This course offers expert instruction as well as a unique experience as you prepare yourself for the citizenship test.

DATES/TIME

Seven consecutive Thursday evenings from May 2 - June 13, 2024.

Classes are from 6:30–8:00pm.

REGISTRATION

Pre-registration is recommended, but students can register at the door on the evening of the first class. Students should possess the ability to read, write, and speak basic English.

FAQs

  • Is the class recommended specifically for those who have lived in the US for at least five years or open to all who are interested in learning?
    • The class will be specifically focusing on the content needed to pass the U.S. citizenship test. Those currently in or about to begin the naturalization process are our target audience. However, we do not require students to prove they are in this process, and those thinking they may want to start soon would also benefit.
  • Will students be required to take an English-language proficiency test to register?
    • No, we are not requiring a language test to register or attend, but we will not be directly focusing on teaching English as a language during the class. Students should have the basic ability to read, write, and understand the content coming into the class. All students will receive a workbook as part of the class, and we plan to have two versions available based on the students' English skills.
  • Is there a registration limit/registration deadline?
    • The class is limited to 20 students. While pre-registration is heavily encouraged, and as long as capacity is not reached prior to the first class, we will accept day-of, in-person registration at the first class. To guarantee a slot, students should pre-register.
  • Is attendance at all seven sessions from 6:30-8:00 p.m. required?
    • The classes are 100% free, so students will not be penalized if they cannot attend every session or need to leave early. However, attendance in all 7 classes is required to obtain all the curriculum information.
  • Age requirement?
    • 18+
