Scope and Content Information
Part I consists of correspondence of Senator Ticer with constituents and other lawmakers, and concerns various issues such as Campaign Virginia (a non-profit organization that lobbies for environmental and consumer issues that affect the interests of Virginia citizens), Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), the Woodrow Wilson Bridge (Washington, D.C.), and poultry waste in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed; campaign correspondence concerning Ticer's re-election bid in 1999; accepted and declined invitations to Ticer to events hosted by state agencies, political groups, civic and non-profit organizations, along with notes concerning her attendance or non-attendance; senate correspondence concerning Ticer's appointments to various committees, deadlines to file bills, session evaluations, office equipment, and receipts for postage, telephone use, and travel during the legislative sessions.
Part II consists of senate and house bills of which Ticer was a patron or co-patron; materials concerning service on the Senate Finance Committee, Senate Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, Joint Commission on Technology and Science, Senate Committee on Rehabilitation and Social Services, Senate Committee on Local Government, and Senate Committee on Agriculture, Conservation and Natural Resources; and bill tracking lists, budget amendments, and legislation considered and/or proposed by Ticer.
Part III consists of supportive material sent to or collected by Ticer concerning mainly legislative bills of which she was a patron or co-patron, and includes correspondence, newsletters, pamphlets, and surveys.
Part IV consists of miscellany concerning speeches Ticer made in 1991-1992 and 1999; previous mayoral campaign material of 1995; newspaper clippings; 2000 legislative session archive files (consists of 2 disks and includes a print out of the content in the file directory) concerning Ticer's response to constituent correspondence and various legislative bills; and videotapes of the "Cable Reports from the Virginia General Assembly."
Biographical/Historical Information
Patricia Smith Ticer (b. 1935), was born in Washington, D.C. In 1991, she became the first woman mayor of Alexandria, Va., and served until 1996. Prior to that she won her first race for a seat on City Council in 1982. She became Vice Mayor in 1984 and was re-elected in 1986 and 1988. Ticer was first elected as Senator from the 30th Senatorial District of Virginia in 1995, and was re-elected to her fourth consecutive term in 2007. She and her husband, Jack Ticer, live in Alexandria.
