Abstract
Main Entry: Robert G. Cabell III and Maude Morgan Cabell Foundation (Richmond, Va.) Title: Records, 1959-2000 Size: ca. 1,200 items (3 boxes) Historical Note: The Robert G. Cabell, III and Maude Morgan Cabell Foundation was established in 1957 by Richmond investments broker and entrepreneur Robert Gamble Cabell and his wife, Maude Crenshaw Morgan Cabell. They intended the organization to distribute permanent gifts and challenge grants to charitable religious and educational institutions for capital expenditures, restricted endowment, and related purposes. In 1960 they funded their creation with a generous gift of over $10,000 in stock, and that principle has grown dramatically over the ensuing years. Today, the foundation’s directors issue grants near or exceeding an annual total of $2 million in the areas of education, human welfare, health and hospitals, arts and culture, historic preservation, the environment, and religion. Summary: This collection consists primarily of corporate and operational records concerning the creation of the foundation, the activities of its officers and directors, their management of assets, and the distribution of income to grant recipients.
Corporate records include the articles of incorporation, by-laws, policy statements, resolutions, and reports to the Virginia State Corporation Commission. Board of Directors’ records include minutes of meetings, along with support materials organized chronologically by meeting date in “meeting files.” Financial records include audits, tax files, accounts and receipts, and bank statements. Investment records contain reports of financial agents (primarily Davenport & Co. of Richmond, Va.), along with transaction reports and receipts.
Officers’ records include surviving correspondence of three major figures in the history of the foundation: J. Read Branch (president), Roy E. Cabell, Jr. (secretary), and B. Walton Turnbull (executive director). These records also include materials reflecting on the day-to-day operations of the foundation, along with selected summaries of grant-funding at various points in the organization’s history. Miscellaneous records include materials concerning settlement of the estate of Maude Crenshaw Morgan Cabell (along with a photograph of her during the last year of her life); information on the attempt by the Virginia Historical Society to purchase some Branch family portraits in 1985; records concerning maintenance of Cabell family graves at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond; and brochures concerning the foundation and its grant-funding program.
Provenance: Deposited by the Robert G. Cabell III and Maude Morgan Cabell Foundation, Richmond, Va., 28 December 2001, through the courtesy of John B. Werner, executive director. Restrictions: This collection is closed for twenty-five years from the date of receipt of the records to any researchers other than members of the Board of Directors and officers of the Cabell Foundation without the express written permission of the current president, secretary, or executive director. Arrangement: The collection is organized into the following subdivisions: Series I: Corporate records (folders 1-10); Series II: Board of Directors’ records (folders 11-40); Series III: Financial records (folders 41-80); Series IV: Investment records (folders 81-96); Series V: Officers’ records (folders 97-115); and Series VI: Miscellaneous records (folders 116-120).
