Volume 4 of Sneden's diary covers the period of the Civil War from the eve of the Fredericksburg Campaign in October 1862 to the battle of Rappahannock Station, Va., in November 1863.

The period 1862 October 26–December 15 (pp. 1–140) concerns the maneuvering of the U.S. Army in Virginia in October 1862, Sneden's service at "Arlington House" as a member of Samuel P. Heintzelman's staff, an assessment of George Brinton McClellan's generalship, and the Fredericksburg Campaign.

The period 1862 December 25–1863 May 2 (pp. 141–290) concerns the battle of Fredericksburg, skirmishing in Prince William and Fairfax counties, Va., in December 1862, the Vicksburg Campaign in December, naval action at Galveston Bay, Texas, in January 1863, Ambrose Burnside's "Mud March," action along the Rappahannock River in March (including the battle of Kelly's Ford), naval operations at Charleston, S.C., in early April, activities of Mosby's Rangers (i.e., the 43rd Virginia Cavalry Battalion) in the spring of 1863, and the Chancellorsville Campaign.

The period 1863 May 3–16 (pp. 291–446) concerns the battle of Chancellorsville, George Stoneman's and Judson Kilpatrick's cavalry raids, the battle of Port Hudson, La., and the Vicksburg Campaign (including the battles of Jackson and Champion Hill, Miss.). The period 1863 April 30–July 2 (pp. 447–590) concerns the Vicksburg Campaign, the surrender of Port Hudson to U.S. forces on 8 July 1863, Sneden's life in Washington, D.C., in June and July 1863 (including news of the Vicksburg and Gettysburg campaigns), the battle of Brandy Station, Va., and the Gettysburg Campaign (through 2 July).

The period 1863 July 2–18 (pp, 591–724) concerns the battle of Gettysburg, Sneden's review of the Vicksburg Campaign, the New York Draft Riots, and military operations at Charleston, S.C.

The period 1863 July 10–October 14 (pp. 725–880) concerns military operations at Charleston (including the Union assault on Fort Wagner), Sneden's life in Washington, D.C., in late July and September, the battle of Chickamauga, and the Bristoe Station Campaign.

The period 1863 October 14–November 7 ( pp. 881–1044) concerns the battle of Bristoe Station, Sneden's service near Bristoe Station on the staff of David Bell Birney in early November, and the battles of Kelly's Ford and Rappahannock Station, Va., on 7 November. Also, includes Sneden's descriptions of the following naval events: operation of Confederate privateers, the battle between the USS Kearsarge and the CSS Alabama, actions on the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers in 1862 between Union and Confederate gunboats, U.S. operations against the CSS Albemarle near Plymouth, N.C., in April 1864, the capture of the Confederate privateers Florida and Georgia, and Confederate blockade running throughout the war.
