Call Number Mss3 AL515 a FA1
Abstract
Main Entry: All Saints Church (Henrico County, Va.) Title: Records, 1883-1983 Size: Ca. 400 items (51 volumes and 6 manuscript boxes) Historical Note: All Saints Church began in 1883 as a mission of Monumental Church, Richmond, in what then constituted Richmond's "West End". Several members of the Monumental vestry procured a frame house on the corner of Madison and Grace Streets in Richmond for the purpose of forming a chapel for Sunday School and evening services. In 1886 the small but growing congregation decided to build a church facility on Madison Street, which was completed in 1888. Ten years later the congregation again voted to build, this time on a lot given the church on Franklin Street. The new facility was contracted in 1898 and completed in 1901. The Madison Street building continued to be used as a Sunday School building.
The Franklin Street edifice became a familiar sight in Richmond through the first half of the twentieth century. By 1955, however, the congregation again felt the need to move. A site adjacent to "Roslyn", the Episcopal retreat on River Road in Henrico County, was chosen and construction completed in 1959. In the 1960s a Parish House was added to the facility, with the addition constructed in 1970.
Scope Note: The records of All Saints Church in this collection include the minute books of the vestry from its formation through 1972. Parish registers list communicants and record baptisms, marriages, and burials performed by All Saints clergymen. Sixteen scrapbooks recall various aspects of the history of the church and its people. Loose papers concentrate primarily on title records to the various church sites, architectural plans and construction, fund raising, both general and specific, and various parish and diocesan activities and programs. Bound volumes are filed on open shelves and loose papers, including miscellaneous printed matter and photographs, are indicated by box in the guide following. Provenance: Deposited by the Vestry of All Saints Church, Henrico County, Va., 23 November 1983 Restrictions: None
