Volume I of Sneden's diary covers the period of the Civil War from the bombardment of Fort Sumter in April 1861 to the eve of the battle of Williamsburg on 5 May 1862.
The period 1861 April 12–August 29 (pp. 1–199) concerns the bombardment of Fort Sumter, Charleston, S.C., early recruiting efforts in the North, the battles of Big Bethel and First Bull Run, and the organization of the 40th New York Infantry Regiment in April through its arrival at Washington, D.C., in August.
The period 1861 September 1–1862 February 6 (pp. 200–399) concerns camp life of the 40th New York Infantry in northern Virginia, scouting along the Potomac River, the battles of Ball's Bluff and Dranesville, Va., a description of "Mount Vernon," Fairfax County, Va., the battle of Mill Springs, Ky., Union observation balloons in northern Virginia, and the capture of Fort Henry, Tenn.
The period 1862 February 10–April 23 (pp. 400–599) concerns the battle of Roanoke Island, N.C., skirmishes in Fairfax County, Va., the battle between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia at Hampton Roads, Va., the movement of the U.S. Army of the Potomac from Washington, D.C., to Fort Monroe, Va., and the opening stages of the siege of Yorktown, Va.
The period 1862 April 13–May 4 (pp. 600–800) concerns the siege of Yorktown, and the battles of Lee's Mill and Kernstown, Va., Fort Donelson, Tenn., and New Bern, N.C.
The period 1862 April [?]–May 4 (pp. 801–886) concerns the march of the U.S. Army of the Potomac from Yorktown to Williamsburg, Va., in early May, the capture by U.S. forces of Fort Pulaski, Ga., a description of Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D.C., and the battle of Shiloh, Tenn.
