Volume 3 of Sneden's diary covers the period of the Civil War from the battle of Savage's Station, Va., on 29 June 1862 through Jeb Stuart's cavalry raid on Chambersburg, Pa., in early October 1862.

The period 1862 June 29–July 1 (pp. 1–198) concerns the battles of Savage's Station, White Oak Swamp, Frazier's Farm, and Malvern Hill.

The period 1862 July 1–August 15 (pp. 199–398) concerns the battle of Malvern Hill, the U.S. Army of the Potomac's occupation of Harrison's Landing, Va., the U.S. Army of Virginia under John Pope, the battle of Cedar Mountain, and the Army of the Potomac's evacuation of the Peninsula in mid-August.

The period 1862 August 15–31 (pp. 399–598) concerns the Army of the Potomac's evacuation of the Peninsula and the Second Bull Run Campaign.

The period 1862 August 30–September 15 (pp. 599–798) concerns the retreat of the Union Army to Washington, D.C., following the Second Battle of Bull Run, the battle of Chantilly, a biography of Gen. Philip Kearny, the reorganization of the U.S. Army in Washington, D.C., in early September, a detailed description of "Arlington," Alexandria County [now Arlington County], Va., and the Maryland Campaign (including the battle of South Mountain and the surrender of Harpers Ferry, Va. [now W. Va.]).

The period 1862 September 15–17 (pp. 799–950) concerns the battle of Antietam.

The period 1862 September 17–October 25 (pp. 951–1051) concerns a review of the battle of Antietam, life at "Arlington House" and in Washington, D.C., in October, and Jeb Stuart's cavalry raid on Chambersburg, Pa. Also, includes an appendix containing endnotes for Volume 3.
