Richmond, VA – The Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) is pleased to announce the museum’s virtual digital programs for April.

Banner Lecture Series
Richmond’s Historic Cemeteries – Thursday, April 8 - Noon

In this virtual Banner Lecture, Ryan K. Smith will explore the history and recovery of the burial grounds on Richmond, Virginia, through the lens of race, comparing these important sites in terms of their initial dynamics as well as their ongoing states of preservation and commemoration. This program is free and will be livestreamed on the VMHC Facebook and YouTube channels.

 

Member Mondays
Mondays, April 5 and 12 at 5:30pm

This popular series exclusively for VMHC Members returns with socially-distanced picnicking at the Virginia House in Richmond’s Windsor Farms on the first and second Mondays of April and May. Student Webinars
Rebuilding America: Reconstruction to Jim Crow
Tuesday, April 13 at 10:00am

During these live webinars, students will be guided through an inquiry process to analyze and interpret primary sources aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning, This program for upper elementary students uses primary sources to analyze political cartoons and paintings about Abraham Lincoln, the Emancipation Proclamation and the end of slavery. This programs are free but registration is required.

Partners in History: BHMVA & VMHC – Monday, April. 14 at 10:00am
Join VHMC Curator L. Paige Newman and representatives of The Black History & Cultural Center of Virginia (BHMVA) for a member-only virtual Curator Conversations program about our exciting new partnership. Between the Lines
April Book Club Selection: Yellow Wife
Tuesday, April 27 at 7:00pm

Join us for the inaugural event of our virtual book club, featuring Yellow Wife by Sadeqa Johnson. This novel follows the life of an enslaved woman in 1850s Virginia and her harrowing experiences in the infamous Richmond jail, Devil’s Half Acre. We are excited to welcome the author for this livestream! Sadeqa will discuss the process of researching and writing the book, and the VMHC Education team will share related objects from the museum’s collections. This event is free, but registration is required.
