Richmond, Va. –Museums, libraries, and community spaces will have access to an exciting new portfolio of traveling exhibitions produced by the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, all designed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American Independence.

Last year, the VMHC launched a major three-year initiative to lead Virginia in marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. This initiative includes various educational programming, marquee exhibitions, special events, and the historic merger with the John Marshall Center (JMC) to create an innovative new civics education center to serve Virginia students.

In March 2025, the Virginia Museum of History & Culture will debut Virginia’s official commemorative exhibit for the 250th anniversary, Give Me Liberty: Virginia & The Forging of a Nation. Presented by Virginia’s 250th Commission and produced in partnership between the VMHC and the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, this exhibition will highlight the essential Virginia people, events, and sites that helped bring liberty and democracy to the nation. Multiple versions of this dynamic new exhibition will also be made available to travel the state in March 2025, and there will be select opportunities to bring this exhibit to Virginia communities at no cost.

Another marquee exhibition, We the People will open in March 2026. This exhibition will explore the many people who, over centuries, have made Virginia the unique place it is in America and in the world and the dramatic impact of the immigrant experience throughout Virginia’s history as people arrived from around the globe. Traveling version of this second marque exhibit will be available to travel beginning in March 2026.

“By launching this new portfolio of traveling exhibitions, the VMHC aims to support communities across the Commonwealth as they mark this once-in-a-generation American moment,” Jamie Bosket, President & CEO at the VMHC said in a statement. “Each exhibition has been thoughtfully designed to create a powerful learning experience that illustrates Virginia’s pivotal role in shaping our nation.”
