An educated citizenry is vital to the functioning of a democracy. As Virginia became a more democratic society, educational opportunities expanded and played an increasingly important role in our cultural fabric. Key moments in Virginia’s rich history of education include: the founding of the second oldest college in the country (College of William and Mary) in 1693, the battles over school desegregation with court cases such as Brown v. Board of Education (1954) during the civil rights movement, and the admission of women to the Virginia Military Institute in 1997.
