Even before English colonists arrived at Jamestown, violent conflicts shaped Virginia’s history. For three centuries Virginia’s fields were scarred, its waters disturbed, and its people engaged in battles to determine who would occupy and control the land, how people should be governed, and whether the United States would be one nation indivisible. During the past century most of the battles have been fought far from Virginia, but as home to the Pentagon, the CIA, and more than two dozen military bases representing every branch of the armed forces, Virginia and its people continue to be a critical part of our nation’s military history.
