Richmond, Va. – This Father’s Day, dads can enjoy free access to the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, including the museum’s most recent exhibitions Julia Child: A Recipe for Life, on view now through September 2, 2024 and A Better Life for Their Children: Julius Rosenwald, Booker T. Washington and the 4,978 Schools That Changed America, on view through April 20, 2025.
Julia Child: A Recipe for Life explores the key ingredients that inspired Julia's passion for cooking through a series of interactive story-telling elements that highlight how the beloved chef's insatiable curiosity and tenacious spirit revolutionized the way Americans cook and eat. Displays exclusive to the exhibition’s showing at VMHC highlight Julia’s connections to Virginia and the influence of French cooking in the Commonwealth’s culinary history. Visitors can also discover the other enduring influences that have been woven into Virginia recipes and the Virginia chefs who used those influences to create unique dishes.
A Better Life for Their Children: Julius Rosenwald, Booker T. Washington and the 4,978 Schools That Changed America honors the legacy of a unique school program established to provide educational opportunities for African Americans during the Jim Crow era. The exhibition’s cornerstone is 26 photographs taken by Atlanta-based photographer Andrew Feiler, along with his stories of Rosenwald schools and their communities. The VMHC also partnered with the Bray School Lab at William & Mary and various Rosenwald school community groups across the Commonwealth to curate a special section of the exhibition that showcases the history of Rosenwald schools in Virginia. This section features a variety of historical artifacts, images, oral histories with alumni, a recreation of a classroom, and more.
To receive free admission this Sunday, dads can simply check in at the guest services desk when they arrive. Tickets for other members of the family can be purchased in person at the museum or online at VirginiaHistory.org.
