Even before Aristophanes wrote of Lysistrata’s plan to end the Peloponnesian War (431–404 BCE) by convincing the women of Greece to withhold sex as a means of forcing men to negotiate peace, it was well known that the support—and consent—of mothers, sisters, and wives was crucial to the prosecution of war.

Secretariat, born at Meadow farm in Caroline County, Virginia, became the first Triple Crown champion in more than twenty-five years. After the superhorse won the first two races of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, hysteria swept across the country.

Although it is not a national holiday, in 1916 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14th as Flag Day, and in August 1949, an act of Congress established National Flag Day.
