Civics Skills

What skills are required to be a member of our civic society? In this unit, students will learn to distinguish between different types of sources, evaluate information to identify fact and opinion, and model civil discussion in the face of conflict and disagreement.

1.1

What kinds of sources do people use to study the past? How do primary and secondary sources help us understand historical events?

1.2

What is the difference between fact and opinion, and how can you tell the two apart? What type of information is most useful when constructing a strong argument?

1.3

Is conflict among a group of citizens good or bad? How do we engage in discussion, or even disagree with people, while remaining civil? Can mediation skills be used to improve civil discussion among citizens?
