On November 11, 1921, known as Armistice Day and the anniversary of the end of World War I in 1918, the remains of an unidentified American casualty of that war were interred atop a hill overlooking Washington, D.C., in a “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.”

The only surviving judicial robe from John Marshall’s 34 years of service as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1801-1835) is on long-term display at the VMHC.
